The LAKEWOOD HIDEAWAY MACKINAC ISLANDexclusive and secluded on the garden level of the LAKEWOOD. Built on Mackinac Island in 1899 and overlooking the Straits of Mackinac, the LAKEWOOD HIDEAWAY is Mackinac Island's newest lodging option and is available for stays of four weeks or longer. The craftsman-style cottage was completely lovingly renovated and restored in 2021 with all of the most modern amenities including free high-speed internet, HDTV, and many other upgrades. During its multi-million dollar 2017-2021 renovation, the LAKEWOOD was completely taken down to the studs, rewired, replumbed, and remodeled to its original historic 1899 grandeur. In addition, new safety systems were added to the LAKEWOOD including a new sprinkler grid, networked sensors, added security features, and more. High-speed cat 6 wiring was installed in every room along with the most technically advanced wi-fi on the island.

High school sweethearts, Richard and Mary Doud, have been married for almost 60 years. After leaving his childhood home on Mackinac Island, Mr. Doud met his future wife, Mary Schulke, when they attended school together in the small upper peninsula town of Houghton, MI. After graduating from Michigan Tech University, Mr. Doud pursued his Juris doctorate at the University of Detroit College of Law. Mrs. Doud became a nurse's aide working at Beaumont Hospital in Detroit. After receiving his J.D. and becoming an attorney, Mr. Doud was a founding member of the law firm, DAVIDSON, BREEN & DOUD. After a prestigious career as one of Michigan's premier Workers' Compensation Lawyers, Mr. Doud retired from the daily practice of law and is currently of counsel with DOUD, SMITH & WAGNER, the next generation of the original D,B&D, with Mr. Doud's son Michael now managing the firm.

When the LAKEWOOD MACKINAC ISLAND was put up for sale by the estate of its previous owner, Mr. and Mrs. Doud, who had always dreamed of becoming Innkeepers, were stunned when the offer they submitted to purchase the LAKEWOOD was accepted. With happy childhood memories of his parents running the LAKEWOOD BED AND BREAKFAST, the Doud's eagerly moved back to Mackinac Island with plans to restart the family business and recreate for the Doud's children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, to share the same fond memories of the LAKEWOOD MACKINAC ISLAND previous generations of Doud's had experienced since 1899. Richard and Mary Doud have 3 children, 9 grandchildren, 2 great grand-grandchildren, and 5 grand-dogs.
